In the latest installment of Retro Rock Reviews, we’re diving into the world of Stryper and their 1990 album “Against the Law.” Released on August 21, this album marked a significant departure for the iconic glam metal band known for their Christian rock roots. Gone are the vibrant yellow and black visuals as well as the God-centric lyrics; instead, Stryper ventured into a more secular territory while maintaining an overall positive message.
Despite the shift in image, “Against the Law” did not achieve the commercial success some may have expected, despite featuring three singles. It’s interesting to note that Michael Sweet, the band’s frontman, has ranked this work as his least favorite among the Stryper catalog. However, I personally believe it represents their pinnacle of creativity.
