Lupita Nyong’o has officially confirmed her single status months after a whirlwind romance with Joshua Jackson. The Oscar-winning actress, known for her role in Black Panther, shared the news in a candid interview with Harper’s Bazaar UK, where she discussed her beloved cat, Yoyo. “My love for my cat is singular,” she stated, hinting that if she were to enter another romantic relationship, it would ultimately be thanks to Yoyo’s influence. “I was prepared to close that door for good, but he has helped keep my heart open.”
Nyong’o’s comments seem to subtly affirm that her relationship with Jackson has come to an end. The two first sparked dating rumors in October 2023, coinciding with her adoption of Yoyo from the Best Friends Animal Society, shortly after her split from sports commentator Selema Masekela. Their romance became public in December 2023, with the couple seen holding hands during a stroll in Joshua Tree, California, solidifying their connection. They were later spotted sharing a passionate kiss on the beach in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, while celebrating Nyong’o’s birthday earlier this year.
While Nyong’o did not directly address her breakup with Jackson in her recent interview, she did reflect on the struggles of dealing with heartbreak in the public eye. “It’s challenging enough to experience heartbreak privately,” she confessed, acknowledging the pressures of being in the spotlight. “When the world perceives you in relation to someone else, it extends the healing process.”
Additionally, Nyong’o spoke about her painful split from Masekela, noting how it was compounded by feelings of betrayal and deceit. “I couldn’t trust him anymore,” she revealed, emphasizing the emotional toll it took on her.
As for Jackson, who recently faced his own marital struggles following the filing of divorce papers by his estranged wife, actress Jodie Turner-Smith, Nyong’o’s comments and latest status hint that both are embarking on new chapters in their lives.
