Christopher Judge Offers Key Advice for a Potential Stargate SG-1 Reboot
It’s been a while since the sci-fi community has seen a fresh “Stargate” series, and even longer since the franchise graced cinema screens. The journey began with Roland Emmerich’s film in 1994, but “Stargate SG-1” has become the cornerstone of the franchise. While it may not have reached the iconic status of “Star Wars” or “Star Trek,” dedicated fans still hope for a revival, whether through films or new series.
In a recent discussion, Christopher Judge, who portrayed Teal’c in “SG-1,” was asked what he would recommend for a reboot, especially in light of J.J. Abrams’ “Star Trek” reimagining. He shared a piece of unexpected advice for any future actor stepping into his legendary role: forget everything from the original series. “Don’t watch any of the 10 seasons that we did,” Judge stated with a chuckle.
His advice stems from a desire for the next actor to carve out their unique interpretation of Teal’c, rather than replicating what has already been established. Judge elaborated, “Just make it your own. It won’t diminish what I’ve done.” This insight underscores the importance of individuality in performance.
Indeed, Judge’s sentiment resonates strongly in the current landscape of remakes and reboots. Fans often express concerns that new adaptations will overshadow the originals. Yet, Judge emphasizes that original performances remain intact for those who wish to revisit them. Remakes can serve to enrich beloved characters, adding new dimensions and highlighting the original performances in fresh light.
For Teal’c to have a successor, “Stargate SG-1” would need to be gearing up for a reboot. Reports from 2022 indicated that Amazon, having acquired MGM, was soliciting new sci-fi concepts, showing some potential interest in “Stargate.” Although there aren’t tangible development updates yet, considering the franchise’s extensive history, a resurgence seems plausible.
In addition to “SG-1” and the 1994 film, the franchise boasts four additional series and three direct-to-video movies. The future of “Stargate” remains uncertain, especially since Emmerich has expressed frustration in developing future projects due to issues surrounding intellectual property rights. “I don’t want to do it, really. I give up,” he shared.
Fans can only hope that someone else will take the reins of this beloved franchise in the near future.
