Mayim Bialik and Jim Parsons Hold Divergent Views on Big Bang Theory’s Potential Comeback
By Nina Starner
In a recent discussion, Jim Parsons, famed for his portrayal of the quirky (old) Sheldon Cooper on the beloved CBS sitcom “The Big Bang Theory,” expressed reservations about revisiting the role. Meanwhile, his on-screen partner, Mayim Bialik, who brought Amy Farrah Fowler to life, holds a contrasting perspective on a possible revival. Bialik, who recently made a guest appearance on NBC’s reboot of “Night Court,” shared with Yahoo her excitement about working again with Melissa Rauch, her former co-star known for playing Bernadette. Bialik voiced her desire to revisit “The Big Bang Theory,” stating, “With all due respect to Jim, there’s a lot of interest and love for these characters,” adding that she’d welcome the opportunity to explore Amy’s character once more.
So, what exactly has Parsons articulated regarding a revival of “The Big Bang Theory,” and what have both actors been up to since the series concluded in 2019? The show wrapped up after a successful twelve-season run, largely influenced by Parsons’ choice to move on, which ultimately led to the show’s finale. Parsons did make a cameo in the series finale of “Young Sheldon,” where he reprised his role as “old” Sheldon. Reflecting on the experience, he found it somewhat surreal but firmly believes that “The Big Bang Theory” shouldn’t be resurrected. In an October 2024 sit-down with Chris Wallace for his podcast, Parsons made his stance clear, saying, “As we sit here now, no,” though he added he would never completely rule anything out, citing how life evolves. He emphasized the uniqueness of the show’s magic, remarking, “They call it lightning in a bottle for a reason,” suggesting that any revival might not capture the same spirit.
Despite his hesitations, Parsons cherishes the memories from his time on the show. “It was the most insane, fortunate blessing that I could have ever asked for,” he noted. Since saying goodbye to Sheldon, Parsons has ventured into a variety of projects, including Ryan Murphy’s Netflix miniseries “Hollywood,” the romantic dramedy “Spoiler Alert,” and stage performances in productions like “Mother Play” and “Our Town.” Although busy, there remains a possibility that he might reconsider his position on a revival of “The Big Bang Theory.”
As for Mayim Bialik, she’s kept herself busy after her tenure as Amy. Leading her own show “Call Me Kat,” produced by Parsons himself, Bialik starred in the sitcom that aired on Fox from 2021 to 2023 for three seasons. Additionally, she co-hosted “Jeopardy!” with Ken Jennings, taking the reigns after Alex Trebek’s passing in 2020, though she stepped down after two years of alternating hosting duties. Notably, Bialik is also known for her earlier role as Blossom from the classic ’90s series.
If the powers that be, including creator Chuck Lorre and the original cast, consider resurrecting “The Big Bang Theory,” Bialik is eager to join the endeavor. The big question remains whether Parsons will be swayed to return as well. For now, fans can still enjoy the entire series of “The Big Bang Theory” available for streaming on Max.
