Chris Wallace is leaving CNN after three years to venture into the world of streaming and podcasting. The veteran broadcaster, now 77, shared his decision with the Daily Beast, stating he plans to exit the network once his contract expires at the year’s end. Wallace expressed a sense of excitement and freedom at being without a job for the first time in over five decades.
During his time at CNN, Wallace hosted “Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace?” and has now turned his attention to the growing fields of streaming and podcasting, noting that these platforms are “where the action seems to be.” He cited the remarkable popularity of personalities like Joe Rogan and Charlamagne Tha God, particularly during the recent presidential election, as sources of inspiration for his new career path.
“This is uncharted territory for me,” he acknowledged. Wallace plans to assess which medium might suit him best and is open to unexpected opportunities that may come his way. He insists that he does not expect to have the same reach as the influential interviewers he admires.
Despite the change, Wallace holds a positive view of his time at CNN, expressing gratitude for the opportunities he received. CNN had hoped to keep Wallace on board, especially as they grapple with fluctuating viewership rates, but he has opted to move forward.
Mark Thompson, the CEO of CNN, recognized Wallace’s contributions, referring to him as one of the most respected journalists in the industry and wishing him success in his future endeavors. Wallace’s lengthy career has seen him make a mark on various major platforms, including “The Today Show,” “Meet the Press,” and Fox News, where he also gained fame for interviewing Donald Trump and moderating a presidential debate in 2020.
As Wallace embarks on this new chapter, the broadcasting landscape will be watching closely to see what direction he takes next.
