At the 2024 VMAs, Tate McRae paid tribute to Britney Spears by channeling the iconic look Spears wore at the 2001 MTV Awards.
The “Greedy” singer arrived on the red carpet in Long Island, NY, sporting a black balconette bra and matching underwear beneath a sheer lace dress by Roberto Cavalli. Her ensemble was a striking nod to the Dolce & Gabbana outfit worn by Spears at the 2001 event. While McRae’s dress was black, Spears’ memorable outfit was navy blue and featured boyshort panties.
According to Brightopis.com ,McRae, 21, completed her look with simple black heels from Maison Ernest, styled her long hair in soft curls, and opted for a subtle smokey eye. The fashion throwback quickly caught the attention of social media users, with one tweet reading, “This is so special to me,” and another noting, “Tate brought back the 2001 VMAs look with such style and confidence.”
The resemblance to Spears’ famous look didn’t go unnoticed, with some fans questioning if it was a theme for the night. Megan Thee Stallion also honored Spears by recreating her infamous snake look from the same awards show.
McRae, who has often been compared to Spears for her dynamic performances and powerful vocals, expressed her admiration for the pop icon in a recent interview. She told Yahoo! in July, “Britney’s an icon and I adore her. I’ve been inspired by her for so long.”
Despite not being slated to perform this year, McRae is nominated for two awards: Best Pop and Best Choreography for her hit “Greedy.” She previously performed at the 2020 VMAs and the 2022 MTV Europe Music Awards.
Reflecting on the success of “Greedy,” McRae shared with Billboard, “I was nervous to release it because it was such a departure from my usual sound. Its success felt incredibly validating. I think I understand what my fans enjoy, but you never really know how things will turn out, so it’s been a special experience.”
