Diane von Furstenberg Shares Her Secrets to Achieving a Stylish Yet Practical Wardrobe
Diane von Furstenberg has opened up about her approach to fashion, especially when it comes to packing the perfect suitcase and mastering daily style, in a recent conversation. The iconic designer, originally from Brussels and now 77, offered her insights while attending the launch of the Diane von Furstenberg: Woman Before Fashion exhibition at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles.
Central to von Furstenberg’s philosophy is her personal motto, “la petite valise,” or “the little suitcase,” which emphasizes dressing with both ease and practicality. She believes that if you can effectively pack a suitcase, you can navigate life with greater fluidity. “The essence of a woman’s wardrobe should consist of timeless, practical staple pieces,” she stated. “Once you have your classic essentials, you can easily incorporate bold, seasonal statement pieces into your outfits to elevate them.”
One signature item in her collection is the wrap dress, a versatile piece that’s been donned by a host of celebrities including Cindy Crawford, Madonna, and Kendall Jenner. “While styles may evolve with trends, we remain committed to the core principles of the DVF brand,” she noted. “We’ve maintained our iconic designs, like the wrap dress, while adapting them to stay relevant and fresh.”
The designer doesn’t just create for women; she draws inspiration directly from the incredible women she encounters. “The theme of the Woman Before Fashion exhibition captures this essence perfectly. My designs prioritize the women who wear them,” she explained.
With every design element—from fabric selection to silhouette choices—von Furstenberg aims to empower women, ensuring they feel confident and liberated in her creations. “My work is always about freedom, a concept that resonates throughout the exhibition.”
The exhibition runs now through August 31, 2025, inviting attendees to explore the inspiring legacy of DVF.
